Like most vehicles your likely to find in Alabama, rust
is a given. I purchased new outer and inner cab corners from
American
Classic Truck Parts. I was pleased with the quality except for the
bottoms where there were several wrinkles. After a few conversations I
was told this was as a result of the molds. If I were to do it again, I
might try the Deluxe cab corners from
Chevy Duty.
Here the cab corners have all been installed and are
awaiting primer. I've sent all this work out to be done by Central
Alabama Restorations. Having someone do it for you isn't cheap, but at
least I know it's done right and my truck will be rust & rot free. In
the future I plan to pick up my own welding rig and learn for myself.
The step plates and lower door hinges were in bad shape.
Years of mud and pine straw trapped in cavities holding moisture. These
old trucks were abused, most doing farm work. Once we're done, this
truck will have the best treatment of it's life.
Both steps were removed and replaced with new items
(purchased from American Classic Truck). The original plan was just to
replace the one side, but in the end we replaced both. In the picture
you can see part of the dollie I built to roll the cab around. Plans for
the dollie were acquired from members of the
Oletrucks mailing list. You
can get the plans yourself here.
